The redesign of the waiting areas at Pier East of Vienna International Airport was guided by a central aim: to significantly enhance the quality of stay for passengers. In close collaboration with our client, Vienna International Airport, we developed a design concept that introduces structure to the expansive spaces while allowing for both active and tranquil forms of waiting.
Furniture islands and carefully placed greenery create distinct zones, offering passengers a variety of atmospheres – from secluded retreats for rest and privacy to open areas for interaction and activity. The smoking cabin was discreetly differentiated with slatted elements, ensuring spatial separation without diminishing the openness of the overall space.
A key focus was on fostering comfort and well-being, especially for long-haul travelers. Diverse seating options – ranging from classic arrangements to group islands and workstations with apron views – address individual passenger needs while providing greater privacy and a stronger sense of place.
The result is a contemporary waiting environment that combines functionality with an inviting atmosphere. A space that not only makes waiting more pleasant but also reinforces the airport’s role as a modern gateway to the world.
